Cape Town Stadium on the Point

It has now been more than three years since the announcement that the old Green Point Stadium would be demolished and replaced by the extraordinary structure that is now called the Cape Town Stadium - one of the prime venues for some of the 2010 FiFa World Cup soccer matches, including the semi-final.

Photographing the various construction phases of the stadium was frequently challenging and always fascinating. The challenge was to uphold my vision of capturing the quality of light and interplay of colours and textures. The fascination was with the focus, commitment and spirit of the construction workers.

Now that the two-year construction phase is complete, the dust has settled, the Cape Town Stadium is already a significant part of the City of Cape Town, especially the historic Green Point area. It brought an era to an end - an era that had been stained by the apartheid decades - and ushered in a new period that encapsulates the aspirations of our young democracy. Undoubtedly the Cape Town Stadium is a beautiful landmark. When standing before it, one is mesmerised by its size and shape. From a distance it is the Stadium on the Point, majestic, spectacular, a play of light and shadow, colour and line. Photographing recently at events inside the Cape Town Stadium the atmosphere was mind blowing.
